• Scarecrow B.I.R.D. Tab: Wildlife management software and airport bird control

  Scarecrow’s flagship product for bird strike prevention at airports is the Scarecrow B.I.R.D. Tab. The product offers two systems in one:

  • Bird dispersal method using a vehicle-mounted system to convey genuine bird distress calls
  • Data logging, analysis and reporting software to aid bird strike prevention at airports

  B.I.R.D. Tab can be installed in any airport vehicle, and consists of a tablet computer, a GPS satellite navigation unit, a pair of loudspeakers, a processor and a touchscreen control interface for the operation. Bird dispersal is achieved via the broadcast of digitally-cleansed, natural bird distress calls which are collated in the extensive Scarecrow bird call library, and the software is adapted to the bespoke needs of each individual airport.

  Scarecrow’s B.I.R.D. Tab bird strike control software features:

  • Up to 20 bird distress calls per airport as required, programmed from Scarecrow’s well established library of calls, assembled with expert ornithologists
  • Efficient data collection capabilities around bird activity, in line with ICAO recommended best practices
  • Ability to define the information collected in line with individual airport requirements, leading to proactive bird strike prevention measures
  • Detailed regular reporting available at the press of a button
  • Easy data analysis of bird activity at airports and areas of concern, allowing teams to take steps to mitigate the risk of future bird strikes

• Initial Training:

  Given the importance of airport bird control, system training is strongly recommended. There are two separate elements to consider:

  1. Bird software: Training is advised on using B.I.R.D Tab for data logging of birds at airports and on how to trigger the broadcast of a bird call for controlled bird dispersal.
  2. Reporting/Analysis Software: Once collected data is transferred into the reporting software, bespoke reports can be run and analysed to inform bird strike prevention actions.

  Scarecrow offer on-site training over two days at the time of purchase. This not only covers initial system configuration, but also the day to day use of both elements of the software. Training also includes, where possible, going out on patrol with a system user to ensure that bird activity and any bird dispersal actions taken are being logged correctly.

  The majority of the training is dedicated to the reporting and analysis software, given the many different features the product has to assist in analysing and managing bird strike prevention at airports.

  

• B.I.R.D. Tab Reporting System

  Scarecrow B.I.R.D. Tab Reporting System is a highly effective data logging and analysis framework for airport bird strike control that has been designed to provide all of the same functions of Scarecrow B.I.R.D. Tab, just without the ability to broadcast distress calls to disperse birds.

  Scarecrow B.I.R.D. Tab Reporting System is easy to use. The tablet can display a database of bird recognition information, including illustrations to aid bird identification. Although the software is not linked to the Scarecrow distress calls there is the ability to log every dispersal action taken and the method used.

  Using a rugged tablet touch-screen with a GPS receiver and data collection software, Scarecrow B.I.R.D. Tab Reporting System creates a complete record of dispersal activity and wildlife observations. The system creates an audit trail featuring date, time, location, operator, species, flock size, attractant, dispersal direction, and method of dispersal utilised.

  Reporting options range from a simple high level ‘Threat Report’ for an initial perspective, drilling down to reports by individual bird species or areas of the airport according to what information is needed by each airport bird strike prevention team.

  

• Premier 2020: Vehicle-installed bio-acoustic bird dispersal at airports

  The Premier 2020 is the replacement for Scarecrow’s well-established and long standing Digi-Scare and Premier 1500 systems. Scarecrow have now sold over 1000 of these various vehicle mounted systems to airports across the world to aid them with their bird strike control programs.

  Unlike its predecessors, the Premier 2020 has been designed and built in a modular format to enable an easy “upgrade” to the fully integrated Scarecrow B.I.R.D. Tab system. The upgrade is a simple process, and enables the continued use of the Premier 2020 for bird dispersal, so that the investment in the Premier 2020 equipment can continue to be used for bird strike prevention at airports.

  

• Off-Aerodrome Reporting (OAR): 13km zone wildlife management reporting for airports

  Designed in conjunction with feedback from four UK international airports, Scarecrow’s O.A.R. is a highly effective data logging and analysis system. The product is specifically designed for those sites that have been identified by an airport as potentially carrying a risk to flight safety via bird strike, due to their proximity to the airport or flight path, combined with the bird life present at those sites.

  The Scarecrow O.A.R. software makes recording bird activity observed off-aerodrome quick and simple. The collected data and subsequent detailed and high quality reporting and analysis that is available means that airports are well-placed to better manage their risk of bird strike in a much more efficient manner, while also displaying the highest standards of commitment to bird strike control and prevention.

  Scarecrow’s O.A.R. software system is easy to use. The tablet displays pre-configured information for quick and easy recording, whilst retaining the flexibility to cope with anything new observed. The availability of on-screen charts provides historic statistics per species and instant trend analysis for “on the spot” decision-making regarding airport bird control.
