Exel Composites – Safety Support Structures for Airports

Exel Composites provides a complete range of frangible safety support structures to airports. All our airport products are fully tested and comply with ICAO and FAA frangibility requirements and even more. Exel’s state-of-the-art design exceeds the requirements by ensuring frangible behavior to whole mast from top to bottom, not only to top. Our fibreglass lattice structure provides the highest stability and low mass. Composite material guarantees the best performance in extreme weather conditions and corrosive environments.

Exel’s frangible airport products include approach lighting masts, anemometer masts, ILS-towers, FOD-towers, airport fencing and apron lighting masts.

Approach lighting masts must break on impact so that airplane can continue its performance with landing or take-off. As specified by ICAO, certain airport equipment and installations, because of their function, must be located in an operational area. ICAO specifies further that all such equipment and installations as well as their supports should be of minimum mass and frangible in order to ensure that impact does not result in loss of control of the aircraft.

Exel Composites is a world’s leading composite profile manufacturer with over 50 years’ experience in demanding composite solutions for various industries. Exel Composites is a global company with 8 manufacturing units worldwide and customers in 60 countries.

Company Profile

  • Frangible Approach Lighting Masts

Exel Composites lattice mast structure ensures the highest possible stability in all conditions. Typically seen approach light masts with pole structures cannot reach similar stability features.

Carefully designed lattice structure is assembled from very thin wall glassfibre tubes, providing the lowest possible weight.

In addition to light weight, stable glassfibre structures guarantee the best performance in extreme weather conditions and lasting performance in corrosive environments.

Exel Composites lattice masts are fully tested under witness of independent third parties (NLR, Intertek) to prove compliance with ICAO and FAA frangibility requirements.

As ICAO’s frangibility requirements only apply to the top 12 meters of the mast, Exel’s lattice mast clearly exceeds these requirements by being frangible throughout full height of the mast.

Lattice masts are available from 1,8 meters to 35 meters.

  • Frangible Weather Mast/Anemometer Mast

Exel Composites masts are full scale impact tested according to the Aerodrome Design Manual Part 6, chapter and FAA AC 150/5345-45C, section 4

    • Exel lattice masts provide an excellent base for installation of various weather monitoring instruments. The firm but lightweight structure is available in a wide range of heights to cover practically any type of installation and ground condition.
    • The standard colouring scheme is orange/white in seven sections, as specified in Annex 14. Other colouring schemes are available.
    • The most typical installation interface for the weather instruments is a spigot at the top of the mast. Other interfaces are available upon request.
    • The mast is supplied with tilting from the base as standard. For taller masts an option of centre hinge is available.

    Built-in Frangibility:

    • Built-in frangibility—no break-away points needed
    • Rigid lattice structure of glassfibre material
    • Transparent to electromagnetic signals
    • Easy installation
    • Maintenance free
    • Bottom hinged mast is best suited for airports having the utility of an access platform. Servicing of the instruments can be done from the basket of the platform without lowering the mast down.
    • Centre hinged mast can be tilted down by one service  person for easy maintenance
  • Frangible Glide Path Tower

Exel Composites has developed a unique range of fibre glass lattice towers which have been delivered to airport installations since 1988.

Fibre glass is a lightweight material that brakes at impact and is transparent to electro-magnetic signals. It tolerates all types of weather and is practically maintenance free.

GP-Tower delivery includes anchor bolts and casting template, sub-assemblies for on site assembly of tower sections, antenna brackets that allow adjustment of antennas both vertically and horizontally, cable conduits, ladder and safety rail and obstruction light.

  • Frangible Airport Fences

AERODROME DESIGN MANUAL PART 6, Frangibility – First Edition, 2006 states that: 1.3 OBSTACLES TO BE MADE FRANGIBLE

…certain airport equipment and installations, because of their function, must be located in an operational area.

All such equipment and installations as well as their supports should be of minimum mass and frangible in order to ensure that impact does not result in loss of control of the aircraft.

Among these equipment are for example fencing.

Exel airport fences are full scale tested to prove compliance with ICAO’s frangibility ruling for approach support structures.

Delivery of Exel frangible fence includes panels, posts with panel clamps, cross-pin for bottom of post for setting in soft ground, corner connectors, gate with two hinges, locking plates for padlock and an illustrated installation manual.
