Rome–Fiumicino International Airport "Leonardo da Vinci"
The history of the capital’s airports begins in 1916, the year in which Ciampino “Giovan Battista Pastine” Airport was inaugurated in Via Appia, for airships and military purposes until 1947. It was the capital’s only airport until 15 January 1961, when the “Leonardo da Vinci” international airport was inaugurated.
With respect to the original project, the extensions carried out were noteworthy and transformed the original structure, making it the first Rome airport project in continuous evolution. On 12 February 1974, with the founding of Aeroporti di Roma all the activities were assigned to a sole handler, which became a sole concessionaire for the management and development of the capital’s airport system.
In more recent years, in July 1997 to be exact, the privatization of Aeroporti di Roma S.p.A, was initiated by putting 45% of the share capital on the market with both a public offering and private placement, for Italian and foreign institutional investors. Privatization was completed in 2000, with the divestment of shares held by the state.
Over the years the many development and modernization interventions at the two airports, have permitted ADR to respond effectively to the increase in the volume of traffic.
In 2018, the ADR airport system registered 48.8 million passengers, with over 230 destinations across the world accessible from Rome thanks to around 100 airlines operating in the two airports.
“Leonardo da Vinci” is the “main hub airport” for scheduled and charter international and intercontinental traffic. Rome Ciampino Giovan Battista Pastine Airport is instead, the airport for low cost traffic, “express courier” goods and General Aviation traffic (state, humanitarian and civil defence flights).

Airport Expansion
In the first phase the interventions are to be carried out in the current airport area. In the next phase, expansion of the airport to the north is planned, through the acquisition of new land. By 2021 an increase in the capacity of the airport largely over 50 million passengers a year is expected, bringing Leonardo da Vinci in line with the main European airports.
In addition to the expansion of the aircraft aprons and completion of a new runway, the terminals system will be extended.At the same time the Master Plan, which outlines the foundations of long-term development, has been defined.
The objective of ADR is to provide the Mediterranean with a modernized, landmark hub, making Leonardo da Vinci into a facility of primary importance on a global level.
Development to the north will mean a further increase in total capacity of additional 50 million passengers a year. Upon completion of the Master Plan the over all capacity of the system will exceed 100 million passengers per year.
The distinctive feature of the airport facilities foreseen for this development resides in their flexibility and the high degree of intermodality of the links with the territory and the city. It is expected that 50% of passengers will reach the new airport using public transport, integrated and connected through an innovative Ground Transportation Centre.
Another key element of the development of the facilities is the high level of environmental sustainability, which renders Fiumicino a virtuous example thanks to self-generation of energy and use of renewable energy resources. And the adoption of the main environmental and local area values in the new facilities, with the integrated management of the recycling of waste and the realization of appropriate environmental compensation works.
The details of the development to the north are:
- A new terminal with higher standards of service;
- Two new runways;
- New aircraft aprons;
- A new system of taxiways to ensure smooth and efficient air traffic flow;
- New technological power plants so as to ensure the self-production of 85% of the overall power requirements;
- Production of 30% of electricity requirements from renewable sources;
- Production of 50% of thermal power requirements from renewable sources;
- Reduction of emissions equal to approximately 15,000 tonnes of CO2 per year;
- A new complex of buildings, car parks, services and facilities.
