With nearly 25.7 million passengers in 2018 Brussels Airport is one of the largest airports in Europe and the main airport in Belgium. Brussels Airport connects the capital of Europe to 248 destinations around the globe, served by 80 airlines.

Over the past few years, Brussels Airport has grown into a multimodal transport hub of which passengers, airlines, commercial partners and staff and the interaction between them are the cornerstones.

With an annual 732,000 tonnes of cargo, Brucargo, the air cargo hub, plays an important role in international logistics and in the success of specific industries including the pharmaceutical industry.

Brussels Airport is the second most important economic growth pole in Belgium with a 1.8% share in the national GDP and an added value for Belgium of € 3.2 billion.

Commercial passenger flights and cargo activities at Brussels Airport together generate direct and indirect employment for 60,000 people.

Brussels Airport closely works together with regional public employment agencies including VDAB (Flanders), Actiris (Brussels) and Forem (Wallonia) to bring together employers at the airport and jobseekers, and promotes an improved accessibility of the airport by public transport to make sure that they arrive at work.

Moreover, noise nuisance was never lower in the past 10 years. This is due to the fact that modern airplanes make less noise and to the decrease in the number of flight movements.

According to a study by the KUL the number of potentially severely annoyed persons in the vicinity of the airport dropped by over 66% between 2000 and 2013.

Compared to 2000 the number of flights dropped by a sharp 27%%: from 326,050 flights in 2000 to 239,349 in 2015. This can largely be attributed to the fact that airlines use ever larger aircraft and to an improved passenger load factor. The average number of passengers per flights has increased by nearly 60%, from 71 persons per flight in 2000 to 113 in 2015.

    • Brussels Airport is located on the territory of Zaventem, Machelen, Steenokkerzeel and Kortenberg.
    • The airport has 3 runways: 07R/25L, 07L/25R and 01/19.

    Runway system

    Brussels Airport has a runway system with 3 runways which together form the shape of a Z: the two parallel runways 07L/25R and 07R/25 L and the transverse runway 01/19.

    Runway 07L/25R has a length of 3,638 metres, runway 07R/25L has a length of 3,211 metres and runway 01/19 is 2,984 metres long.

    Runway numbering

    All of these runways can be used in either direction. One of the two complementary names is used depending on the direction of use.

    The figures correspond to the angle formed between the magnetic north and the flight direction of the aircraft divided by 10. Letters are added if two or more runways are parallel to each other.

    The letter ‘L’ means the runway to the left when you look in the direction of flight, ‘R’ indicates the runway to the right.

    Why do aircraft at Brussels Airport usually land from the east and take off towards the west?

    Landing and take-off preferably take place into the wind, although a deviation from this can be made in low winds. Because the wind at Brussels Airport mainly blows from the south west, the aircraft generally take off in a south-westerly direction and land from the east.

    During the night and at the weekend, when there is less traffic, deviations are made from this general rule. With the intention of distributing disturbance by noise as much as possible, the federal government has imposed a specific preferential runway system, better known under the English abbreviation PRS.

    How does it work?
    Brussels Airport’s Diamond lounges are available for passengers of different airlines and partners of which the names are displayed at the entrance to the lounge.

    Check with your airline if lounge access is included in your booking. If your ticket does not allow you free access, you can buy access regardless of your ticket class or the airline you fly with. Children under 12 get free entrance.

    You can buy your lounge access at the lounge reception desk or through our Digital Lounge Pass Platform. You can also buy access for your co-travellers. Digital Lounge Passes are not linked to a specific date, name or gate area.

    You can’t make it this time? No worries!
    Your Digitial Lounge Pass is valid for a year from the moment you buy it. The pass can also be transferred to a friend.

    Where to find our lounges?

    • Pier A: Walk to gate A42. Opposite the gate, you will find the escalator towards the lounges. At the top of the escalator, turn right to the Diamond Lounge. The Diamond Lounge in pier A is open every day from 4.30 am to 9 pm.
    • Pier B: Go to gates B01- B05. Opposite the gates, you will find the stairs and elevators which will bring you to the lounges. The Diamond Lounge is open every day from 5 am to 11 pm.
